Web 2.0: the first 5 years and the future.

The internet is a relatively young technology that has been growing a lot during the 90 and 2000's. Part of the reason the internet is growing so much is the way people access the internet. People are now able to access the web from smart phones, from iPads, from gaming consoles, etc. Web 2.0 five years on Its about precisely that: the fact that the web's grow has not limit and that the applications available online are the main tools people use. From search engines, to video browsers, to picture finders, to maps; everything has become indispensable for internet users.

The application I like the most is video applications like Youtube and netflix. Youtube enables me to find videos from topics that interest me. It serves as a resource for pop culture videos, educational videos, online activism or just pure waste of time. I discovered Netflix during winter 2010 when i spend time in a house with no TV. I used netflix to watch shows and movies online for very cheap.

  1. You raise good points, especially centering on the importance of how people access the internet. Recently I was on a flight, from Seattle to Milwaukee, and I was surprised to find the airline no longer offered movies, but instead internet access. It is really amazing how reliant our society has become on the Internet, in such a short amount of time. I also agree with you that video web applications are really exciting. I do not think I would have cable if it wasn't for the need to watch live sports games. Otherwise everything else is accessible online.

  2. Omar,
I find streaming any sort of audio or video to extremely convenient. Now a days I rarely watch TV on my actual television, I am usually streaming episodes online. The same goes for listening to music, I have two main sites I use (playlist.com and Pandora.com) to listen to music. The concept of streaming audio and video has enhanced the way I utilize the web.

  3. I totally agree with your explanation of youtube. I too find it a great resource to the ever changing world and space filler. I would also wonder about society and culture, though. How are they influenced by youtube as well as just portrayed via this outlet. People being able to access the Internet, like you said, from anywhere and on any device makes it more available to upload to and therefore boast new ideas at whim.

  4. You definitely have one of the big points of Web Squared down, that is, content is no longer tied to a particular medium. Content is mobile. I would've been curious to hear a bit more about your thoughts on sensory devices, as that's one of the big differences between Web 2.0 and Web Squared (well, mobility and sensory devices). Next time just work to make a few more direct references to the reading. And, I'm totally with you on YouTube. I go to look at one thing, then I get sucked in by all the links and end up wasting hours of my life. It's great.

  5. The internet has exploded within the last 5 years. I still remember purchasing a home PC and having to wait like 3 minutes to download a picture. Our technology is growing in a fast pace and there’s no slowing it down. Something that has definitely changed over the last 5 years is video streaming. During the late 90s early 2000s the internet was super slow and I don’t remember doing any video streams during those time. Now a day, internet provider supply extremely fast internet giving us the ability to stream videos over the net. I don’t have cable nor Netflix, I usually just stream videos online. The only thing that I dislike about online streaming is that I never catch a movie that is about to start. I either have to watch it from where its at or just come back to that page later and start it from the beginning. Is not as convenient at Netflix, when you can start a movie whenever you want from the beginning

  6. I totally agree with you. The fact that the internet is starting to play such vital role in our everyday lives is amazing. The whole idea of connectivity across the globe, with such a relatively simple "instrument" is astounding. I to agree with you also about YouTube and other such sites. We are becoming such a visual based culture that we seem to learn more through such sites than reading the newspaper.
