Blog # 5

In chapter 8, Weinberger talked about labels and what we today call tags as a way to search for data. He used examples used in amazon and walmart and how when you type certain words the engine gives you results of similar words. This relates to the third order of order because tags and labels can mean different things to different objects and subjects. This means that for example a song "x" can be part of your hip hop collection, but can be my old school songs collection, or my roommate's workout mix. This same idea applies to stuff available on the internet. The tags and keywords users give to particular information on the internet does not depend on one finite perspective. By that, we shape the cyber world.

  1. I love your image! The use of such an iconic photo and turning it into something different is really interesting. You said "The tags and keywords users give to particular information on the internet does not depend on one finite perspective" and it got me thinking - how do we ensure tags are accurate? I just read Jason's blog and he talked about how tags like "wings" and "fly" can represent a lot of very different things. So maybe tagging things can only work for one person's own music or picture library? Do you think it's possible for us to create a universal tag library?

  2. It's true, we do shape the cyber world. Every little thing we do online shapes the web in some way or form. Tags and keywords have become essential because of the abundance of information circulating the web. Think about what the web would be like without tags, probably a mess! Your image is awesome by the way!

  3. Simple and clean. Good description about the chapter. The cyber world is ours. I really am starting to believe that the internet wouldn't be this great without each and everyone of its users. Yes, even the junior high kids. I remember when I was in 7th grade using aim to chat. Think of how cyber space will be if everyone in the world had almost the same technology and broadband connection. Cyber space will change for the better.

  4. You've got the gist here, but make sure in the future to do a bit more work specifically referring to the prompt itself. I asked about implicit/explicit and the connection to the 3rd order, and I don't quite see anything specifically about that here. It's sort of implied in a way, but not entirely explicit (speaking of implicit/explicit). I'm also a little curious to hear more about your image. Does it, as the prompt asked: "Third, draw/sketch/photoshop the following: choose a song that is important to you in some way. Draw the implicit web of meanings that make this song important to you. That is, make the implicit explicit."

    Thanks.

  5. Very nice post. That picture is very iconic and has played a important role in our history. You had a good description of the the chapter as well. The internet is such an impressive tool, that couldn't be what it is with out all us users.
I remember how we would have to wait for about 5 minutes before we could connect to the internet. Now if we cant connect within seconds we get frustrated.
